Rocket Fuel: 1/11/13

To cap off the week, we’re bringing you a round-up of stories related to the Consumer Electronics show in Vegas, which ends today. What you see on the floor at this show may impact how we digest – and potentially engage with – all forms of media, from Traditional to Social. Some (ahem, The Atlantic) have questioned it’s potential to attract game changing technology, however it’s easy to see the everyday business value in showing here. That, and sometimes it’s not about breaking boundaries but rather evolving and pushing the current envelope ever so slightly to prep consumers for even bigger break throughs. Curious to see some of what you might expect in the coming year? Read on for our favorite stories and trends:

Monday Throwback: Mad Men Era Ads

We were doing some research and came across a plethora of not so subtle ads that we’re all but sure would be banned in today’s ultra PC world. Misogynistic with lots of blatant racialism, it’s unreal to look at these and think how much the face of advertising has changed. What’s really interesting is that many female-targeted ads play up the “Stepword wife” image, showing women at home cooking and cleaning, which begs the question, how can ads help shape gender roles and influence societal behaviors?

ZEITGEIST: the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era

Zeitgeist: is there a word any more German sounding? At any rate, it’s one of those things everyone loves to ponder as the year comes to a close. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time remembering what I was Tweeting, sharing on Facebook and searching for last week, not to mention in January! Luckily, the ever-amazing Google team has recapped the year in searches here for your pleasure. I like to think of it as the Internet’s year book. Everything from images that trended (One Direction, anyone?) to top searched movies (remember Paranormal Activity 4? Yeah, me neither) can be found in Google Zeitgeist.

The coolest feature though? In my opinion that would be the interactive map in which you can search trending topics in different areas of the world. Take a look and try it for yourself; and if you’re not motivated already, maybe the video below will inspire you to take a peek!

And, the Color You’ll Be Seeing Everywhere in 2013 Is…

In case you haven’t already heard, Pantone – the authority on all things color – released their pick for 2013′s “Color of the Year” late last week. And the verdict? Emerald, more specifically Pantone® 17-5641. You might think the color of the year is nonsensical, but au contraire: Pantone’s annual announcement dubbing the upcoming year’s hottest hue has become big business for the marketplace. Sephora is already set to release a Pantone collaboration based on the latest hue of the moment this upcoming March, while JCPenney is debuting a bedding collection in collaboration with Pantone inspired by the verdant color this February. The announcement of Pantone’s “Color of the Year” has become something of a juggernaut itself, with bloggers taking to the web to release the news as soon as it’s put out there. Fun fact: since the announcement, there have been over 1,200 Tweets sharing the news from the @Pantone handle.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said in a press release that the shade is, “…The color of growth, renewal and prosperity – no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.” Pyscho-social musings aside, how do you feel about Emerald and do you think you’ll be seeing more of it in design this upcoming year?

NBA Embracing Social Media: A Step In The Right Direction

The NBA awards has taken to the social channels- Finally. On June 6th, the NBA announced a special segment of the NBA awards to be dedicated to active players, owners, and fans whom excel at using social media.  Awards will celebrate social media success on platforms including TwitterFacebookInstagram and YouTube, according to league representatives. Awards recipients will be the player who best uses social media across all platforms, the team or players who created the season’s most viral blooper play and the team whose social following saw this biggest boost this year.  The NBA has proven to take what I believe is a proper route in dealing with the new social platforms, instead of discouraging players from reaching their fans via Twitter, instagram, Facebook, etc.  The NBA is the first, will the rest of the sports leagues follow suite?  What do you think?
